Congo Kivu Organic has received a notable cupping score of 86 and comes from a unique SOPACDI (La Solidarité pour la Promotion des Actions Café et le Développement Intégral) cooperative in Tsheya-Minova village in the Eastern D.R. Congo. The cooperative was founded in 2003 and its mission is to empower local smallholder coffee farmers, especially female farmers who have endured civil war. At the moment there are approximately 7000 farmers of which around 1500 are widowed women.
This groundbreaking project is one of the first to receive e.g. organic certification and the well-respected SCAA Sustainability Award in 2014. All of the coffees are traceable as well.
The ongoing development of production methods to ensure the quality of the coffee is also one of the co-operative's main objectives, with ”We have lived through civil war and in great poverty but our spirit and resolve are stronger than ever” as their motto. Mokkamestarit aims to keep coffee from this area permanently in the selection, thus supporting the area as it strives to move forward.
